Recent Reads -- Summer 2021

Just a quick roundup of books I've read recently. They're linked out so you can read more and I'll give you my arbitrary rating out of 5 =)

Anxious People by Fredrick Backman (4/5)

Charming read, loved the message paired with the lighthearted tone + plot twist.

Firefly Lane by Kristin Hannah (2.5/5)

A book about friendship that I really enjoyed reading (+ netflix show! Also average tbh) but definitely lacked depth. Super sweet and a nice book to get lost in.

Oil and Marble by Stephanie Storey (4.5/5)

AMAZING book! I was in awe of the way the author made the historical figures come to life, and loved reading about this time period.

The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skloot (4/5)

Everyone should read this book simply to understand the hidden history of the HeLa cells. The corruption and emotional abuse of both Henrietta and the Lacks family is horrifying and eye opening.

Midnight Library by Matt Haig (3/5)

Loved the message of this book but it got to be a bit redundant. Would actually recommend for younger audiences or a reader on the cusp of a big life change!

Hamnet by Maggie O'Farrell (5/5)

This book is both inspiring and heartbreaking. Based on the world's most famous playwright and his nonconformist lover + wife during the bubonic plague. Seriously read it.

Malibu Rising by Taylor Jenkins Reid (3/5)

A solid beach read (aka trashy novel) but nothing special. Would be per for an airplane or vacation! Entertaining and fun.

A Gentleman in Moscow by Amor Towles (4.5/5)

This book is a masterpiece. So beautifully written and such charming characters, it was hard to put down. There is history woven in and some parts that get a bit dry, but overall I adored this book and would highly recommend it.

Between Two Kingdoms by Suleika Jaouad (3/5)

A memoir of a young woman's life changing diagnosis with Leukemia. Hard to get through at times but very eye opening to read a very raw and honest story of a life that revolves around cancer.

Daisy Jones & The Six By Taylor Jenkins Reid (4/5)

This reads like A Star is Born and I loved it. The adventures and struggles of a starlet thrusted into fame and all the people she meets along the way. Crushed this one, got so sucked into it and couldn't put it down!

It Ends with Us by Colleen Hoover (2/5)

This book didn't do it for me. I saw it was growing in popularity so I jumped on the train but was disappointed. Super predictable and cheesy, but fun to sit down and crush in a weekend. (Don't worry I know I'm the only one who hates it LOL)
